Working with a Charity
While in India, if I ever worked with a charity, I would have sure enough worked against those extreme organisations bent on spreading the religions lest it would only make the country more and more communal. How much my views have changed cannot be said, but the fact is that I am working with a charity these days whose main aim is to spread the word of Jainism amongst the local public of the UK.
There is yet one difference which I can clearly make out, being that the main aim of spreading the word of Mahavira (the 24th Tirthankara) is more out of the fact that his teachings have been very much pro non violence and equality of all life. While what I realised is that the youth in these multi cultural countries, are so disillusioned and confused about religions, if there is some religion which could show them the right ways to live one's life, they could (probably) be more accepting of the religion or to say the philosophy.
The Government also gives you all support in ways of grants and other help if they see in your work a chance for community cohesion and upliftment of all life. Back in India, we would probably brand our government if it did encourage the local public to be more biased towards one's religion or community. But England being England, people are much more tolerant and peace and harmony would be their order of the day and they would care less of what religion you follow and if you do not follow any.
So while all that the Govt here could do, is encourage minority community to progress without ever taking the risk of being called 'racist', we Indians will only sit and wonder if the hoardes of jokes that we crack on the Surdar intellect and the Gujarati/ Marwari miserliness and the Malayalam accent can ever land us into a racial battle??
Well, the fact remains that the Government in London, is responsible for thousands of people earning their daily bread, thanks to all the charities and organisations that are working towards the spread of their religious philosophy.
